MBBS admission in Karnataka runs through NEET UG, but the counselling process that follows confuses most first-time applicants. Here is how it actually works, step by step.
Step 1: NEET UG Result
Your NEET UG score and All-India Rank (AIR) are the starting point for every MBBS seat in the country, government or private, state or all-India quota.
Step 2: Choosing State vs All-India Counselling
15% of government college seats are filled through the All-India Quota (AIQ), conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC). The remaining seats — including most private college seats — are filled through Karnataka's own state counselling, conducted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), open to Karnataka-domicile candidates for state quota seats and to all-India candidates for private college seats.
Step 3: Registration & Choice Filling
After results, you register for KEA counselling, verify documents, and fill your college/course preferences in order. Seats are allotted round by round based on your rank and preference order — this typically runs across 2–3 main rounds plus a mop-up round.
Step 4: Where Management Quota Fits In
Private medical colleges in Karnataka also have a management quota category, filled directly by the college for candidates who meet the NEET qualifying cutoff but did not get a seat through the merit-based state or AIQ rounds. This route typically opens after the main KEA counselling rounds conclude.
